After more than two months of being closed for renovation, the main entrance to Fort Jackson off of Forest Drive re-opened today.
Officials held a ribbon cutting ceremony at Fort Jackson’s Gate 2 on Wednesday.
The gate is opening a day earlier than originally anticipated. Construction on the new gate began on July 9th and officials estimated the gate would re-open on September 20th. Up until today, traffic in and out of Fort Jackson has been re-routed to the three other gates on Percival Road, Fort Jackson Boulevard and Leesburg Road. Officials say motorists will now be able to access the base 24/7 at the main entrance located off of I-77.
During the two months of construction, officials added an additional traffic lane and built a new covered entrance which is now more than 17 feet tall. Fort Jackson officials say the new entrance will allow commercial traffic to enter in and out of the main gate when necessary.
The project was estimated to cost $800,000.
